Competition Medical

Competition Medical.

£80/£130

A competition medical is a health assessment designed to make sure you’re fit to take part in a demanding event, challenge or expedition. The exact requirements can vary depending on the organiser, event or destination, but the assessment will usually look at your medical history, current health and any conditions or medication that could affect your ability to participate safely. If required, we can also carry out an ECG as part of your assessment. We’ll talk you through the process and make sure you understand what’s involved.

You require this medical if any of the following apply

A doctor-signed medical certificate is mandatory for many European sports events. Organisers use them to prove you are physically fit for intense competition. Ultimately, requirements vary by event, sport and country but the key details of what is required are usually stipulated on the event form.

Examples of past competition certificates, completed by The Worthing Clinic, include:

  • UTMB World Series: Requires a specific medical certificate uploaded to your runner account before the deadline. It must use the official UTMB template.

  • Marathon des Sables (MDS): Requires a specific MDS medical certificate which includes reviewing a resting ECG (electrocardiogram). Both must be completed within a strict, narrow window right before the race.

  • Cycling - Gran Fondo Strade Bianche / Maratona dles Dolomites: Must use the exact Italian medical certificate provided by the organisers. A generic “this person is fit” note from the GP will be rejected by the event team.

  • Open Water Swimming (Turkey/Italy): These events often require confirmation of cardiovascular fitness and a resting ECG (electrocardiogram) documented on the event medical form.

What to expect during the medical

Your medical history, sport competition history, family history, social history, medications, and allergies will be discussed with the doctor.

You will be examined, by the doctor, with your consent.

Depending upon the specific requirements of the competition the following measurements/tests will be undertaken:

  1. Weight / Height / BMI

  2. Blood Pressure

  3. Eye sight test (Snellen chart)

  4. Urine test

  5. Spirometry (lung function test)

  6. 12 lead electrocardiogram (resting ECG)

Please note: If the competition regulations state that a cardiac stress exercise test is required, this can be organised in advance of this appointment at our partner site in Worthing for an additional fee (made payable to them). Please call us if this applies to you.

Appointment duration

Allow approximately 30–60 minutes for your appointment; depending on if you require an ECG or not.

What to bring

A valid, in date photo ID, the correct competition/event medical form, your glasses/contact lenses should you wear any, your NHS Summary Care Record (SCR) - this is a summary, usually 2 x A4, of your key health information taken from your GP medical records (ask your GP receptionist to print this off for you free of charge) - without these your medical will not go ahead but you will still be charged.

Where to attend

In clinic only.

Certificate issued

Once your assessment is complete, we’ll provide or complete the medical certificate, form or report required by the event organiser. If an ECG is included, this can also be provided as part of your medical documentation where required. We will complete your paperwork during your appointment, so you can leave with everything you need. If additional documentation is required afterwards, we’ll let you know.

Certificate validity period

The validity period depends on the competition, expedition or event organiser. It is usually valid for 1 year from the date of certification unless the event stipulates otherwise .
