Expedition Medical

Expedition Medical.

£80/£130

An expedition medical checks that you’re fit to travel and take part safely in remote or challenging environments, from high-altitude treks to polar voyages and adventure travel. Medical help can be hours or even days away in these settings, so expedition companies want to know about any health issues before you set off. The doctor will review your medical history, current health, medication and vaccination history, and consider the specific demands of your trip, such as altitude, cold, heat or physical exertion. If your expedition provider requires one, we can also carry out a resting ECG. We’ll complete the provider’s medical form and make sure you understand any advice before you travel.

You require this medical if any of the following apply

A doctor-signed medical certificate is mandatory for many expeditions. Companies use them to understand whether you are mentally and physically fit enough to participate in their activities and to determine what additional care they may need to provide during the voyage or expedition. When travelling to often remote regions of our planet with limited medical and rescue services this degree of risk must be assessed before departure.

Examples of past expedition certificates, completed by The Worthing Clinic, include:

  • BBC Race Across The World: reality TV participants' medical certificates

  • HX Expeditions: Antarctic cruises (requires a specific HX expedition medical certificate to be completed before embarking)

  • Himalayan Trekking (Everest Base Camp): Many commercial trekking and organised expedition companies require a signed form from a doctor confirming that you have no cardiovascular, respiratory, or chronic health contraindications for high-altitude exertion above 3,500 metres.

  • G Adventures: Commercial travel company with expeditions worldwide. If any yes box is ticked in the self declaration section, Section B on the G Adventures medical form will need to be completed by one of our doctors.

What to expect during the medical

Your medical history, travel history, vaccination history, family history, social history, medications, and allergies will be discussed with the doctor. You will be examined by the doctor, with your consent.

Depending upon the specific requirements of the expedition the following measurements/tests will be undertaken:

  1. Weight / Height / BMI

  2. Blood Pressure

  3. Eye sight test (Snellen chart)

  4. Urine test

  5. Spirometry (lung function test)

  6. 12 lead electrocardiogram (resting ECG)

Appointment duration

Allow approximately 30–60 minutes for your appointment; depending on if you require an ECG or not.

What to bring

A valid, in date photo ID, the correct expedition medical form, your glasses/contact lenses should you wear any, your NHS Summary Care Record (SCR) - this is a summary, usually 2 x A4, of your key health information, including vaccinations, taken from your GP medical records (ask your GP receptionist to print this off for you free of charge) - without these your medical will not go ahead but you will still be charged.

Where to attend

In clinic only.

Certificate issued

Once your assessment is complete, we’ll provide or complete the medical certificate, form or report required by the event organiser. If an ECG is included, this can also be provided as part of your medical documentation where required. We will complete your paperwork during your appointment, so you can leave with everything you need. If additional documentation is required afterwards, we’ll let you know.

Certificate validity period

The validity period depends on the expedition or event organiser. It is usually valid for 1 year from the date of certification unless the expedition form stipulates otherwise.
