A confined spaces medical is a fitness check for anyone who works in tanks, tunnels, silos or other enclosed areas. Your employer usually requires it under health and safety law before you can enter. The appointment covers your medical history, heart and lung health, breathing, hearing and your ability to wear breathing apparatus or escape gear safely. The doctor then signs the certificate your employer needs — confirming you're fit to work safely in confined spaces.
You require this medical if any of the following apply
Employees who enter tanks, silos, tunnels, sewers, pits or other enclosed spaces as part of their role
Workers in construction, utilities, water treatment, engineering and manufacturing
Anyone required by an employer to hold a valid confined spaces medical certificate
Personnel who need to wear breathing apparatus, harnesses or escape sets in these environments
Contractors and agency staff working on sites where a valid certificate is a condition of entry
What to expect during the medical
Full medical history review, including any past or current conditions
Blood pressure and pulse check
Heart and lung examination, plus a breathing assessment
Vision and hearing tests
Fitness to wear breathing apparatus, harnesses and escape sets
Height, weight and general physical examination

What to bring
Please bring photo ID (passport or driving licence), a list of any current medications, your glasses, contacts or hearing aids if you use them and any form or questionnaire your employer has provided.

Certificate issued
A signed confined spaces medical certificate / fitness-to-work certificate, confirming your fitness to work in enclosed environments and to use breathing apparatus or escape sets. After your appointment, you will receive an email notification from our portal, Orchid Live, allowing you to securely view and download your certificate electronically.
Certificate validity period
Typically up to 1–2 years, depending on your employer's requirements and the nature of the role. Many organisations set a shorter renewal window for higher-risk work.
