HAVS (Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome) Tier 1-4 is a workplace health programme for employees regularly exposed to hand-arm vibration from tools and machinery. For employers, it helps identify early signs of HAVS, monitor employees’ health and identify where further action may be needed. The results can support reviews of workplace controls and help employers meet their responsibilities for protecting workers from vibration-related health risks.

You require this medical if any of the following apply

HAVS Tier 1-4 is for employers whose workers regularly use vibrating tools or machinery.

It is particularly relevant to industries such as construction, engineering, manufacturing, groundworks and utilities, where employees may have significant exposure to hand-arm vibration.

Employers use the service to monitor workers’ health, identify early symptoms and support effective workplace vibration controls.

What's included

  • HAVS health surveillance assessment.

  • Review of employees’ exposure to hand-arm vibration.

  • Assessment for symptoms and early signs of HAVS.

  • Appropriate health checks and questionnaire.

The process

Step 1 - Arrange surveillance

The employer provides details of the workforce and vibration exposure, and we agree the appropriate surveillance arrangements. This is normally an initial questionnaire sent from our secure portal.

Step 2 - Employee assessment

Employees attend their appropriate HAVS tier health surveillance assessment if required, based on the doctor’s assessment of their initial questionnaire.

Step 3 - Results and advice

Employees are informed of their results with a formal report, with any concerns identified for further investigation or other appropriate action.

Step 4 - Employer reporting

The employer receives the relevant outcome and information to support ongoing health surveillance and vibration risk management.

COMPLIANCE AND LEGISLATION

HAVS health surveillance forms part of an employer's responsibilities under the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005 where workers are at risk from hand-arm vibration. HSE guidance recommends a tiered approach, with Tiers 1 and 2 using questionnaires and Tiers 3 and 4 involving clinical assessment. Where health surveillance is required, it should be carried out annually.
