Noise Health Surveillance

Noise health surveillance is a workplace health service for employees who are regularly exposed to high levels of noise. It helps employers identify early signs of hearing damage, reduce the risk of work-related hearing loss and support compliance with workplace noise regulations. Following each assessment, employers receive the relevant health surveillance outcome and documentation, allowing them to keep records up to date, monitor changes in employees’ hearing and identify where further action may be needed.

It is particularly relevant to industries such as construction, manufacturing, engineering, utilities and industrial workplaces where noisy machinery, tools or equipment are used.

Employers may use the service as part of their noise risk management and health surveillance arrangements, helping them monitor employees’ hearing and meet their workplace health and safety responsibilities.

The process

Step 1 - Arrange health surveillance

The employer provides details of the workforce and workplace noise exposure. We agree the appropriate arrangements for the employees requiring surveillance.

Step 2 - Employee questionnaire and consent

The employee receives their initial questionnaire and consent form through Orchid Live before their assessment.

Step 3 - Hearing assessment

The employee completes their noise health surveillance assessment, including a hearing test (audiometry) and review of relevant hearing history and symptoms.

Step 4 - Outcomes and records

The employee receives their individual health surveillance outcome. The employer receives the relevant employer outcome and health surveillance documentation, which can be viewed securely through their Orchid Live dashboard.

COMPLIANCE AND LEGISLATION

The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 require employers to assess and control the risks from workplace noise. Where employees are at risk of hearing damage from noise exposure, employers must provide suitable health surveillance, including hearing tests. The results can help employers identify hearing damage, review their noise controls and take further action where required.
