Respiratory Health Surveillance

Respiratory Health Surveillance.

Respiratory health surveillance is a series of regular lung health checks for people whose work exposes them to substances that can cause asthma or other lung disease, such as flour dust, isocyanates, wood dust or silica. Employers must provide it under the COSHH Regulations when a risk assessment shows exposure remains after controls are in place. At your appointment you complete a respiratory questionnaire and a simple breathing test (spirometry). Our clinical team reviews the results, explains them to you, and advises your employer on any action, helping catch problems early, when they can often be reversed.

You require this medical if any of the following apply

  • Workers exposed to substances that can cause occupational asthma, such as flour dust, wood dust, isocyanates or latex

  • Construction, stonework and tiling workers exposed to silica dust

  • Anyone whose employer’s COSHH risk assessment shows a lung health risk remains after controls

  • New starters and existing staff due a baseline or repeat check

  • Employers who need documented proof they are monitoring lung health

What's included

  • Respiratory questionnaire: questions about your work, health and any breathing symptoms

  • Lung function test (spirometry): a quick, painless breathing test using a handheld device

  • Clinical review: a clinician reviews your answers and results

  • Results explained: you get the outcome in person, with advice on protecting your lungs

  • Employer report: your employer receives the outcome and any recommended actions

The process

Step 1 - Arrange health surveillance

The employer provides details of the workforce and relevant workplace exposures. We agree the appropriate arrangements for the employees requiring respiratory surveillance.

Step 2 - Employee questionnaire and consent

The employee receives their initial questionnaire and consent form through our occupational health Orchid Live portal before their assessment.

Step 3 - Respiratory health assessment

The employee completes their respiratory health surveillance assessment, including a review of their work activities, health and any breathing symptoms.

Step 4 - Outcomes and records

The employee receives their individual health surveillance outcome, while the employer receives the relevant employer outcome and documentation. Reports are securely stored and can be accessed through the employer’s Orchid Live dashboard.

COMPLIANCE AND LEGISLATION

Under the COSHH Regulations 2002, employers must provide health surveillance when a risk assessment shows workers’ health is still at risk from hazardous substances after controls are in place. For asthma-causing substances and silica dust, HSE advises a respiratory questionnaire and lung function test overseen by an occupational health professional. The Worthing Clinic always communicates with the employer beforehand to discuss previous health surveillance and the occupational health provider, plan the right next steps and advise on the likelihood of an X-ray. If our doctor considers a chest X-ray necessary, it will incur an extra cost.
